I am interested in all kinds of economic problems involving spillovers between economic actors where coordination and cooperation would lead to global welfare gains, but which typically suffer from "free riding behaviour" (i.e., not everyone contributes their fair share to the overall gain). I examine what factors cause free-riding behaviour and how and through which measures this can be mitigated. Many of these problems relate to collective decision-making and the global management of natural resources and environmental assets. International and global environmental problems such as climate change and overfishing are prominent examples.
