Abstract:

More than 5,000 pupils in Carinthia and Slovenia were surveyed on their attitudes towards neighboring countries and languages, nationalism and the European Union, old and new minorities in Europe and the relations of Carinthia and Slovenia. During several months of preparation, 80 pupils from nine grammar schools in Carinthia and Slovenia took the task of researching their country's history and their family histories and to explore attitudes towards the neighboring country, Europe and minorities. Their findings were discussed in a three-day encounter in the bilingual region of Carinthia, where they had to reflect the many histories on both sides of the border and their attitudes. Finally, they worked out common approaches for the future, which they were able to discuss at the end of the workshop with representatives from politics, diplomacy, the church and the school system in both countries. The results were transported via a variety of media to the wider public.
