Economics tries to comprehend the conditions for the wealth of nations and regions – as economist I try to enlarge this knowledge with own research, to pass it on to students and to apply it in economic policy consulting.

The main emphasis of my research lies in the fields of regional development, economic policy, managing technological change, economics of sports as well as aspects of economic change in space and time.

As a member of numerous economic associations I am part of a wide international network with intensive knowledge exchange. As expert and consultant I work for international organizations such as the World Bank, OECD, Council of Europe, for regional and national governments and European institutions as well as private clients.

In doing so I am nevertheless aware that economic rationality is just one aspect of our existence and what makes sense in an economic sense may be not be right in another. Economics and the economy alone do not create sense and meaning. But well designed it opens spheres of freedom in which the challenge of using freedom to create sense may succeed.
